Guide to New Year Resolution 2017

It’s that time of year again. As you look back on 2016, did you accomplish everything you set out to do? If not, we have some tips to make 2017 your best year ever! The examples used for these tips are health and fitness related but can be used for other goals as well.

#1 Start Today

One of the biggest obstacles to goal achievement is procrastination. Have you ever said to yourself, “Oh I’ll just start tomorrow.” Then weeks go by and the stuff you needed to do is still not done? Challenge yourself to start today. Some things you can do today include going for a  30-minute jog, scheduling a group fitness class, or writing down your 2017 goals. These activities are very proactive and don’t take much time at all.

#2 Write it down

Write down everything you want to achieve in 2017. The writing process is the first step to goal achievement. It helps narrow down the specific tasks you need to complete in order to achieve your goal. Make sure the goals you write down are SMART (specific, measurable, agreed upon, relevant, and time bound). Below is an example of a SMART Goal:

    My goal is to lose 10lbs in 10 Weeks (1lbs a week)

        -I will exercise for at least 30 minutes 3 times a week.

        -Through diet and exercise, I will reduce caloric intake by 500 calories per day.

#3 Schedule

Each goal you set will require time and dedication. The best way to stay on track is to plan your workouts and specific tasks on a calendar. If you plan on working out early in the morning, make sure you have time to get ready for work. Below is an example of my calendar, I factor in my time for workouts plus the additional time for me to be at work on time.

#4 Don’t strive for perfection

The most common phrase I hear is “I missed my workout today, I guess I’ll start next week.”. Don’t restart your progress because of one missed workout or because you cheated on your diet. A Lot of people fall into the trap of avoiding their program because of these little mishaps. Just keep in mind that you will never have the best conditions every day.

Hopefully, these tips will help make your 2017 very successful. They're hundreds of things you could do today to reach closer to your goals. Get a headstart on the new year, you don't have to wait until January to start.
