Guide to New Year Resolution 2017

It’s that time of year again. As you look back on 2016, did you accomplish everything you set out to do? If not, we have some tips to make 2017 your best year ever! The examples used for these tips are health and fitness related but can be used for other goals as well.

#1 Start Today

One of the biggest obstacles to goal achievement is procrastination. Have you ever said to yourself, “Oh I’ll just start tomorrow.” Then weeks go by and the stuff you needed to do is still not done? Challenge yourself to start today. Some things you can do today include going for a  30-minute jog, scheduling a group fitness class, or writing down your 2017 goals. These activities are very proactive and don’t take much time at all.

#2 Write it down

Write down everything you want to achieve in 2017. The writing process is the first step to goal achievement. It helps narrow down the specific tasks you need to complete in order to achieve your goal. Make sure the goals you write down are SMART (specific, measurable, agreed upon, relevant, and time bound). Below is an example of a SMART Goal:

    My goal is to lose 10lbs in 10 Weeks (1lbs a week)

        -I will exercise for at least 30 minutes 3 times a week.

        -Through diet and exercise, I will reduce caloric intake by 500 calories per day.

#3 Schedule

Each goal you set will require time and dedication. The best way to stay on track is to plan your workouts and specific tasks on a calendar. If you plan on working out early in the morning, make sure you have time to get ready for work. Below is an example of my calendar, I factor in my time for workouts plus the additional time for me to be at work on time.


#4 Don’t strive for perfection

The most common phrase I hear is “I missed my workout today, I guess I’ll start next week.”. Don’t restart your progress because of one missed workout or because you cheated on your diet. A Lot of people fall into the trap of avoiding their program because of these little mishaps. Just keep in mind that you will never have the best conditions every day.

Hopefully, these tips will help make your 2017 very successful. They're hundreds of things you could do today to reach closer to your goals. Get a headstart on the new year, you don't have to wait until January to start.


Personal Training Benefits Outweigh Costs

Hiring a personal trainer is one of the best things you can do for your health and well-being. However, the biggest drawback for hiring a personal trainer is the upfront costs. On average, most personal trainers charge $50-60 per hourly session. If you purchase 10 hourly sessions over a 5-week span it can total around $500, and that can be a sticker shock to most people. However, the benefits of personal training outweigh the cost. This is especially true when you consider the long-term health care cost of physical inactivity.

The Cost of Physical Inactivity

The University of Michigan conducted a study and concluded employees who were physically active saved more money in health care costs annually than employees who were physically inactive. This is especially true for employees who were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (the group of conditions that lead to heart disease). The metabolic group who were physically inactive paid $1,085 more a year in health care cost than the physically active group. Over a 2-3 year span, people who are physically inactive can spend more than $3,200 in health care costs

Many companies are realizing that physical activity can reduce health care costs for its employees and the company. This is why more companies are offering to pay for gym memberships and other fitness programs. Hopefully, this trend will continue and more companies will offer health and fitness benefits to its employees.

Way to Save

As more companies start to provide additional health & fitness benefits to its employees, most people will not have the option. However, there are still some ways you could save on personal training.

Group Personal Training- With group personal training, you split the cost with 1-2 other people. This is becoming a popular option for potential clients because it lowers the cost you would pay individual and you have a friend that will keep you on track. However, just make sure you have similar fitness goals and are at the same level of fitness starting out. Avoiding to do so could lead to potential problems like people dropping out of the program or lack of motivation. 

Group Fitness Classes- If you only can meet with your personal trainer 1-2 times a week, you can supplement fitness classes into your program. This is a great way to enhance your training program if you're the type of person that has a hard time working out alone. It's important to let your personal trainer know the dates/times of your classes. This is to ensure you don't overtrain and have plenty of rest between workouts.

Stick to the Program- Ultimately it is up to you to adhere to the training program your personal trainer creates. If you find yourself consistently skipping workouts and missing scheduled appointments, it will just waste money and prolong the time of your program.
